Client Testimonials About Us…well About Me really…and this site About this Site This site is primarily for my clients as well as other inexperienced computer users. It is written in plain english for that very purpose although there are lots of goodies in this site for the more experienced user. It has not been written with advertising in mind which is why its not written in 'web copy' and not designed for advertising, so there's no pop-up ads or anything to buy.
How it all started As happens with a lot of small or home businesses it starts from a hobby or personal pursuit. Our first computer was a Commodore 64. We picked bits up from garage sales and soon had a good selection of equipment. Our first PC purchase was from Macrocom in Wellington
well over 10 years ago. I was terrified of the thing. Had never seen Windows before and if I hadn’t used a mouse on the Commodore 64 already, I probably would’ve picked the mouse up and started talking into it. Well, I figured out how to get it working only to nearly wreck the thing by putting a heater too close and melting the front of the tower. The guys on the helpline thought it was hilarious but we of course were still in the throes of a ‘silent scream’. Bad news, it had to go back to Wellington to have a new faceplate. Good news, the only thing that needed any repair was in fact the faceplate - $18.00 if I remember correctly, everything else was fine. Wohoo she said with a *sigh* of relief. In the very early days, not having any access to a computer guru, repairs and fixes were gleaned from others who knew more than me, the odd shop (while getting a CD drive or something put in) and from courses taken at a local college. As time moved on I found my mentor and ‘saver of my sanity’ in the form of Barry Leahy – Computer Care Wanganui. A top bloke who has no illusions about the idiocy of people (yep, ME included!) who
willingly imparts his knowledge to me and others. He has more stories than
you’ve had hot dinners and his clients, like myself, are grateful for his
time, experience and care. If there
is something I cannot diagnose, fix, or otherwise resolve, it is HE that I will send you to. And it continued... Over the last few years, I have done more courses, both online and at Wanganui City College as well as accounting and office experience. It came to the point where friends and family were phoning for advice on all manner of computer and electronics related subjects. Inevitably someone said ‘hey you’d do good at this for a small business’ and the idea was born. So I went and saw my friendly bank man, the IRD guy, and a bean-counter, to make everything legal-like. And the rest, as they say, is history. I am still learning and will always do so as there’s always new toys to be envious of and new operating systems to come to grips with (I really wanted to like Vista – really I did!) I enjoy teaching people who
want to learn and who are passionate about the things they are trying to do on their computer. My qualifications and Fields of Expertise… My field of knowlege is more to do with Basic Computing and making Windows behave, as well as peripherals (printers, tablets, cameras etc) and software. I do not have the in-depth knowledge of hardware required to take apart computers or fix more ‘technical’ under-the-hood issues. What I do have is a good solid knowledge of typical computer user problems & issues. It’s about the right person for the right job. Just as you wouldn’t get a plumber to put in new carpet, I won’t tell you I can install a new hard drive or remove a rootkit from your computer. But I can help you with a myriad of other annoyances and problems that you as a user will face – from resetting your email servers to advising on backup methods, producing a powerpoint presentation, or installing a new camera. And all within the comfort of your own home. For a detailed list of all the things I can help you with, please check my Services page. For the things that are not within my field, I can refer you to an excellent technician (Barry Leahy above) who will get you sorted. My official
computing qualifications at the moment are: 2007 National Certificate in Computing Level 3 NCEA Level 3 NCEA Level 2 2006 Certificate in Computer Applications Level 2 (Waikato Institute of Technology)
2000 National Certificate in Computing Level 2 So…be you an older home user just emailing family or doing a UCOL course, a homeschooling mum who needs to give her kids a start with computer use, or a seasoned user who’s just gotten stuck and can’t find a way to fix it …give me a call. If I can’t help you myself, I’m sure to have some options for you to resolve your issues or someone else who can help. Cheers |
